What and How does it work?

So when a game is using a certain thread the most, I was told to set that threads priority to idle, but won't setting it on higher make the game performance better?

Yes. If you set the thread priority to Idle then that thread will only execute instructions when the system is idle and that's the worst setting for games. You don't need to manually adjust thread priories (especially for games), the best way to improve game performance is by just right-clicking the process on the Processes tab and change the Priority menu to Above Normal (or High) and the I/O Priority menu to High - those settings are process wide and setting them both to High can dramatically improve game performance for some games.
